Position Summary: For nearly a century, Bellingrath Gardens and Home has embellished its renowned outdoor display beds with plants propagated and grown on-site in Bellingrath’s own greenhouse facilities through an intense Horticulture program. Bellingrath Gardens & Home is looking for an experienced, proficient, and passionate Greenhouse Grower who loves plants and can grow just about anything—bedding plants, specialty seasonal display plants (trained Chrysanthemums, poinsettias, etc.), tropicals, annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, vines, etc.

About Bellingrath Gardens & Home: Bellingrath Gardens and Home is the historic 65-acre estate and home of Walter D. Bellingrath and Bessie Morse Bellingrath, opened to the public in 1932. In 1949, Mr. Bellingrath established a foundation on his 80^th birthday to perpetuate the Gardens and Home as a “permanent and fitting memorial” to his wife’s “artistry and genius.” Today, visitors to Bellingrath Gardens and Home stroll through the vibrant and ever-changing estate garden and tour the historic home, built in 1935 and filled with the original furnishings and pieces collected by the two founders. Bellingrath is Alabama’s oldest public garden, remaining relevant today through its many varied programs, including its award-winning “Magic Christmas in Lights” holiday festival.

Primary responsibilities:

● Oversee all greenhouse operations, including crop scheduling, propagation, growing, traditional and integrated pest management, and finishing

● Work with Director of Horticulture to develop and implement plant trials

● Propagate and produce all plants to sell at seasonal plant sales and ongoing sales in the Atrium, per crops specified by Assistant Greenhouse & Nursery Manager

● Assess and communicate proper safety practices throughout the nursery complex

● Work alongside Assistant Greenhouse & Nursery Manager to ensure that professional standards of cleanliness and sanitation are being met by the staff and for the plants

● Regularly discuss with Director of Horticulture needed upgrades and major repairs of greenhouse facilities and systems and related structures

● Apply pesticides and/or schedule applications as needed to protect and benefit crops

● Organize greenhouse plants to optimize growing conditions, inventory, and crop handling for each plant variety

● Work with Director of Horticulture to maintain accurate documentation and storage of nursery chemicals according to Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries requirements

● Assist in planning for new or renovated greenhouse/nursery complex and associated facilities

● Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

● Associate’s degree in horticulture or related subject required; bachelor’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

● Proven proficiency in all aspects of greenhouse crop production, particularly with florist pot crops such as poinsettias and chrysanthemums, but also with bedding plants and crops taken from liners to finish

● Knowledge and experience with modern pest control products and procedures, fertilizers, and greenhouse control systems

● Proven proficiency in all aspects of plant propagation

● Proven organizational skills

● Experience and knowledge of greenhouse equipment and tools

● Ability to work daily for extended periods of time in climatic conditions typical to Mobile, Alabama

● Ability to lift 50+ pounds

● Current Alabama Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License, or ability to procure one upon hire

● Valid driver’s license
