About the Role
Job entails a wide range of activities, including maintaining plant and algae stocks, ordering materials for exhibits, creating interpretive artwork and signage, making microscope slides, and a little bit of electrical and mechanical troubleshooting for exhibits. It also entails coordinating with other staff members for 7-day coverage of Conservatory. Reports to the Science Content and Technology Manager.
Essential Duties
- Pre-opening preparation of exhibits (plants, microscope slides, powering up and adjusting exhibits, cleaning and safety checks).
- Staffing the information desk during public hours and providing oversight of the exhibits.
- Closing, covering exhibits, and cleanup.
- Interaction with other staff, Huntington members, and other visitors.
- Supervision of high school and adult volunteers.
- Oversight and coordination of staff and volunteers behind the scenes; exhibit support and teaching greenhouse.

Candidate Requirements and Experience
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Bachelor of Science in horticulture, botany or biology strongly preferred.
- Ability to shift schedules to coordinate coverage.
- Candidate should have a passion for plants and people.
Experience
- Teaching experience also helpful.
- Experience with Adobe Illustrator and computer literacy a plus.
Working Conditions
- Will work in the Tropical Conservatory, a 16,000 square foot tropical greenhouse with over 50 interactive exhibits. It includes tropical, cloud forest and bog climates that can be warm and humid.
- Must be able to stand for long periods, stoop, bend, lift up to 25 lbs.
