Historic Estate Seeks Assistant Gardener
Large estate on the outskirts of Reading PA seeks an assistant gardener for full-time, year-round employment. The position includes all aspects of gardening, landscaping and some lawn care. While experience in all of these areas is appreciated there is plenty of opportunity for on- the-job training.
Intensively landscaped beds, a formal English garden, and a sunken garden are around the main house and guest houses. Moving outwards into more natural aspects of the property includes a meadow, woodland walk, orchard and lawns. Two greenhouses are utilized for overwintering tender plants, starting bulbs and seeds.
Looking for an individual who is willing to work hard, work to high standards, and enjoys being a part of a small team. There is opportunity for more responsibility when they prove proficient in their role. The current team includes Head Gardener, Lawn Specialist and Care Taker.
Tasks:
Mulching, weeding, pruning, watering, fertilizing, staking, raking, leaf clean up, planting of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and planters. Basic care of water features. Arrangements for the household and events. Holiday decorating and seasonal planters. Orchard care includes pruning, weeding and picking. Some mowing and weed-wacking. Greenhouse work includes starting seeds and bulbs, transplanting, and pest control. Vegetable bed maintenance. Maintenance of tools and equipment. Snow removal during winter months off walkways and plants.
Operate tractor, back hoe, mini-excavator and small dump truck.
Requirements:
Able to lift 50lbs
Valid driver’s license.
HS Diploma
Some experience in landscaping, horticulture or lawn care required. Additional training and education preferred.
